Bangkok Mass Transit (BTS and MRT)
Highlights:
- In 2019, Bangkok has five existing BTS, and MRT lines cover the business and residential districts.
- The expansion of the Bangkok mass transit is undergoing. By 2025, Bangkok will have more mass transit lines than in London. This development will shape Bangkok to be well-connected and enables people to travel seamlessly.
Get to Know BTS Skytrain and MRT Underground:
BTS (The Bangkok Mass Transit System) and MRT (The Metropolitan Rapid Transit) is a crucial public transportation network, serving more than 800,000 passengers per day. Existing BTS lines cover the downtown business district such as 1) Silom Line (covers such as Silom and leisure tourist destinations), 2. Sukhumvit Line (covers such as Siam, Asoke, Thonglor). Whereas the MRT (Blue line) covers new CBD and residential neighborhoods such as Phetchaburi, RAMA9, Ratchada, and Ladprao.
Mass Transit Project (Existing and Future Development):
1) Existing BTS and MTR Lines: Currently, the Bangkok mass trasit covers five routs with a total distance of 109.8 km which are;
- BTS: Green Line: Sukhumvit route, Mo Chit -- Samrong 23.3km (The 1st popular)
- BTS: Green Line: Silom route, National Stadium -- Bang Wa 14km (The 3rd popular)
- MRT: Blue Line: Hua Lamphong -- Bang Sue -- Tao Poon 21km (The 2nd popular)
- MRT: Purple Line: Tao Poon -- Bang Yai 23km
- Airport Rail Link: Phaya Thai -- Suvarnabhumi Airport 28.5km

2) Future Development of BTS and MTR Lines: By 2025, the mass transit trasportation will cover 286 stations through out Bangkok.

Railways under construction consist of eight routes with a distance of 185.8km:
- Green Line: Bearing -- Samut Prakan 13km
- Blue Line: Bang Sue -- Tha Phra, Hua Lamphong -- Bang Khae, to be launched in 2020
- Green Line: Mo Chit -- Saphan Mai -- Khu Khot 18.4km, 2020
- Red Line: Bang Sue -- Rangsit 26.3km, 2020
- Red Line: Bang Sue -- Taling Chan 15km, 2021
- Pink Line: Khae Rai -- Min Buri 34.5km, 2021
- Yellow Line: Ladprao -- Samrong 30.4km, 2021
- Orange Line: Thailand Cultural Centre -- Min Buri 21.2km, 2023
Projects currently going through a bidding process consist of three routes with a distance of 51.1km:
- Red Line: Bang Sue -- Hua Lamphong 8.5km, 2023
- Red Line: Bang Sue -- Hua Mark 19km, 2023
- Purple Line: Tao Poon -- Ratchaburana 23.6km, 2024
Projects that are yet to be approved by the cabinet consist of seven routes totalling 87.6km:
- Blue Line: Bang Khae -- Phutthamonton Sai 4 8km, 2023
- Green Line: Samut Prakan -- Bang Pu 9.5km, 2023
- Green Line: Khu Khot -- Lam Luk Ka 6.5km, 2023
- Orange Line: Thailand Cultural Centre -- Bang Khun Non 13.4km, 2025
- Red Line: Rangsit -- Thammasat University 8.9km, 2022
- Red Line: Salaya -- Taling Chan -- Sirirat 19.5km, 2022
- Airport Rail link: Phaya Thai -- Don Mueang Airport 21.8km
